Happy Earth Day! - April 20, 2008

Happy Earth Day, Friends! We though we'd take a moment to share what we're doing to make Hullabaloo a cleaner, greener operation.

We've always packaged our CDs in paperboard sleeves because we wanted to keep it minimal and recyclable. We felt good about that but it always bothered us that the paper wasn't recycled, the ink wasn't as earth-friendly as it could be and it was all wrapped in shrink-wrap.

The new CD, Tall as a Tree is our first CD to be packaged in recycled paperboard and printed with vegetable based ink. Even better, we found a way to seal the package with a small sticker instead of wrapping it in plastic. Hooray!

It's a small victory but we're happy about it. We figure it's the little things that we all do that add up to make a big difference.

As we re-order our previous albums, we'll switch them over to this new packaging.

Next on our list is organic cotton t-shirts and onesies! We found a great source for high-quality, environmentally sound clothing for your little ones. They should be printed up and ready to go for our May 18th CD release show at Quail Gardens!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

Tall as a Tree - March 17, 2008

The new album will be called "Tall as a Tree" and it will be here soon! We've finished our end of things and expect to send it off to the manufacturer any day now.

We're really excited about the songs and the way the recording came out. We can't wait to share it with you.

We've always tried to go with minimal packaging in all our CDs opting for a cardboard sleeve rather than a plastic box. We're happy to report that "Tall as a Tree" will not only have that same style packaging but the cardboard is recycled and the inks used in the printing process are vegetable -based. Every little bit helps!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

New Year. . .New album - January 1, 2008

Happy New Year!!! 2007 was ana mazing year here at Hullabaloo World headquarters. By the time it was all said and done, we played somewhere near 300 shows. Thank you for all your support. We look forward to singing with you again in 2008.

Now that the holiday madness is behind us, we're all fired up to get back in the studio to record a new album.

As usual, we've got a batch of new original songs, some classic traditional kid-folk songs and a couple of obscure old folk tunes to complete the mix.

As always, we'll keep you posted!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

"Hey, Everybody!" wins Best Recording - November 27, 2007

We're pleased to announce that "Hey, Everybody!" just won "Best Recording for Young Children" in the Children's Music Web Awards. We are particularly proud of this award because it is guided by adults but chosen by kids!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

Big Shows This Fall (and Winter)! - September 6, 2007

Summer was great! It's our favorite time of year here at Hullabaloo World Headquarters but we're even more excited about this fall and winter because we've got some great shows planned. Here's the scoop. . .

On September 16th we're hosting our "End of Summer Picnic" at Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas. We'll set up in the Eucalyptus grove down by the kid's garden. The music will start at 11:00. Bring a blanket and some snacks. Enjoy the music and stroll in the Gardens.

October brings the return of the Powerhouse Kid's Concert Series. We'll be back at our favorite concert hall by the sea every other month through June.

We're planning a very special concert for November. We've had such a great year we want to say "thank you" and give something back to the community that has given us so much. On November 10th we're putting on a concert at the Lyceum Theater in Horton Plaza. Our friend Godfrey the Magician will open the show. Tickets are just $5 and EVERY penny goes to benefit the San Diego Food Bank. Many thanks to the Parent Connection, Rattle-n-Roll, Stroller Strides, Java Mama, Kidsville Playland and Thinker Things for making it possible.

On December 2nd we'll be back at the Powerhouse.

More information on all these shows is available in the "Calendar" section of the website.

We hope you are well and that we'll see you soon!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

Hey, Everybody! - April 30, 2007

Howdy Friends,

Or perhaps, I should say, "Hey, Everybody!" That's the name of our new album. We've been hard at work on this one for several months now.

The good news is it's almost ready. We shipped everything off to the replicators last week. If all goes according to plan, we'll have copies by mid-May.

We posted a few song samples here on the website. Please have a listten and let us know what you think!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

Still in the studio. . . - March 27, 2007

We're still busy putting the finishing touches on the last few songs of the new CD. We're really excited about the way it's all coming together. The album is tentatively titled "Hey, Everybody!" It should be out by the end of May.

We're pleased to have some great guest musicians on this album. Our favorite rock'n'roll guitarist, Fred Kokaska played some electric guitar and on a few tracks, bass master, Mark Dycaico is playing the low notes for us and Dennis Caplinger sweetened things up with his amazing fiddle, mandolin, banjo and dobro playing.

We can't wait to share the results with you!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

New Photos in the Gallery - January 12, 2007

Our friend Jenn Wanis just emailed us some great photos of a playgroup concert. We've posted them in the photo gallery for you to enjoy. We were really impressed by Jenn's work. Here's a link to her site if you'd like to see more. http://www.jwanisphotos.com/

Back in the Studio - January 11, 2007

So far, we've spent a good portion of the new year in the studio recording for our next album.

We're really excited to add some special guests this time around. We've already recorded bassist Mark Dycaico ( of Funky Pox and Bare Bones) on a bunch of tracks.

This week we've got Dennis Caplinger coming in to record some banjo, mandolin and fiddle. Dennis has recorded with everyone under the sun. He just finished working with Eric Clapton and J.J. Cale on their "Road to Escondido" album. We're honored to have him record for us!

The songs are shaping up nicely. We can't wait to share them with you.

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

It's been quite a year! - December 26, 2006

As 2006 comes to a close, we've been doing a lot of smiling here at Hullabaloo World Headquarters (the back corner of Steve's mom's garage).

In the course of a year we released two albums, won a Parents' Choice Award, heard our music on the radio, got some nice reviews, played a whole heap of shows and met some great people.

In 2007 we hope to do more of the same. In fact, we're already gearing up to get back in the studio and record our latest batch of songs and our gig calendar is filling up quickly.

As we look at last year and plan our route through the next one, we really want to thank you for all your support. Your kind words, smiling faces, beautiful voices and stomping feet keep us inspired.

Here's to a happy, peaceful, musical new year!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

A Parents' Choice Award! - October 5, 2006

We're pleased to announce that "Sing Along With Sam" was chosen for a 2006 Parents' Choice Award!

Here's what they had to say about the album:

The Hullabaloo Band (Steve Denyes and Brendan Kremer) packs bales of fun in these twelve fresh upbeat farm-themed songs. Blending country music with rock, folk, bluegrass and blues seems almost effortless to the multi-talented foot stomping, chest pounding, cajon tapping, banjo-strumming duo. They put their own imprint on well-placed (and played) covers including, “Erie Canal,” “Buffalo Gals,” and “Mama Don't Allow.” The tongue twisting “Mama Llama” (with a nod to Cass Elliot), “Diamonds and Dogs,” and the reggae tinged “Too Much Mango” are among the witty originals.

We're excited about the award and happy that Brendan's chest pounding is finally getting the recognition it deserves!

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

Free Concerts for Playgroups - September 18, 2006

About a month ago, I made the decision to quit my “grown-up” job as an elementary school music teacher so I could spend more time making music and less time in staff meetings. I now give private music lessons in the afternoons but that leaves the first half of my day open to play music for kids and their parents at playgroups and informal house concerts.

If you’re a part of a playgroup (or even just have a handful of friends) that would like to get together and sing and dance with their kids, let me know. I’d love to come out and share some music. I’ll even come out for free the first time. Here’s how it works. . .

If you can pull together a group of 5 or more adults and their little ones (on a weekday before 2:00 p.m.), I’ll come to your house, park, or community center and put on a free 30-minute concert. Brendan still has a grown-up job to tend to during the week so it will really be half a Hullabaloo concert.

When it’s all over I’ll have free posters for the kids and make our CDs available for purchase. If I can sell a handful of CDs, it works out great for all of us!

If that sounds like fun to you, just shoot me an email and we’ll work out the details.

Take care,
Steve (Hullabaloo's singer/strummer)

Powerhouse Kid's Concert - September 1, 2006

Here at Hullabaloo World Headquarters we're sad to see Summer go. The warm water and long days will soon be a thing of the past but there's some good news too. . . Pretty soon our beaches will be quiet, traffic will fade (a bit) and the subtle changes of Fall in Southern California will be upon us.

Fall also brings the start of the Powerhouse Kid's Concert Series. Each month, the Del Mar Foundation will present a free kid's music show at the Powerhouse Community Center in Del Mar.

Please join us on September 10th at 1:00 p.m. for the first concert of the series. We'll play for about an hour and then set you free to enjoy the park, play structure and, of course, the beach! For more details, check out our calendar.

Please tell a friend, neighbor, or playgroup. The more the merrier!

Run Bunny Run Video - August 13, 2006

Here at Hullabaloo World Headquarters (the back corner of Steve's mom's garage) we believe that homemade is always best. From cookies to music, if it's homemade it's got our vote. With that in mind we decided to make our own music video.

Armed with Steve's sister's video camera, a handful of cute kids, and the wild bunnies of Lopez Island, Washington we accomplished our goal. Visit http://www.sonicbids.com/hullabaloo (and then click on the video tab at the top of the page) to see the results.

We'd love to know what you think. Send us an email or give us your thoughts via our guestbook.

Take care,
Steve and Brendan

CD Release Concerts! - June 27, 2006

Many thanks to all you that came out to our CD release shows in June. We had a great time and hope that you did too! We posted a few pictures of ourselves in our (accidentally) coordinated outfits at the Encinitas show.

American Institute for Art & Communities Likes Sam! - May 22, 2006

We just got word that three of our songs from Sing Along With Sam have been chosen for a 5-CD set of children's music compiled by the American Institute for the Arts & Communities. They chose "All of These Things," "What a Week It's Been" and "If It Were Up To Me."

The proceeds from the CD project will benefit school music programs! We're proud to be a part of it.

Sing Along With Sam - May 10, 2006

After six months of writing, recording, and wrangling twelve new songs into shape, we’ve got a shiny, new CD to show for our efforts. Our extensive market research (chatting with Steve’s nieces) and our dedicated focus group (Brendan’s daughters) give us every reason to believe that this is our best album yet.

If that wasn’t enough, CDBaby.com, the biggest and best independent music retailer in the known universe just posted a great review of Sing Along With Sam and is currently featuring us on their homepage. You can read their review, listen to the album and even purchase a copy if you like here on the website.

We’re planning two free CD release concerts in early June – one in Encinitas at the Encinitas 101 Artists’ Colony (June 10th at 2 p.m.) and one in North Park at the North Park Vaudeville Theater and Candy Shop (June 11th at 2 p.m.). All the details (plus more June shows) are listed in the calendar section.

We look forward to singing with you soon!
